ONE of the city’s biggest forthcoming marathons, registration for GiveLife Chennai Marathon opened on Thursday.

The event kicked off in grandeur enough to get in crowds with tennis legend, Vijay Amritraj, Karthi P Chidambaram and other Indian athletes like Mohammed Riyaz and R Natraj, besides younger sports icons like Squash champions Deepika Pallikal and Joshna Chinnappa.

The first registration form was signed by Karthi Chidambaram. “India has been a nation of spectators. Our participation in sports is dismal.

Physical fitness should be made a part of the syllabus and physical fitness teachers must be treated with the same respect and given the same pay as the others,” he said.

Vijay Amritraj, who though being fashionably late, turned out to be a delight for the kids as he first went over to greet them warmly and even posed with them for a photograph.

“I think it’s a very special gift to be able to do things through an NGO to serve people. Unless we address such important issues, it is very difficult to help,” he said.

Calling out to students to participate, he said, “It’s very important that between 3 pm to 6 pm, students are not inside their homes, but outside, involved in any sport.

Chennai Marathon has to evolve like the New York marathon.” Akhila Srinivasan, MD of Shriram Life and Chairperson, GiveLife, and Fr Jegath Gaspar Raj, Co-Founder of GiveLife, briefed on the various terms and prizes of the marathon.

The total prize money involved is an enormous Rs 70 lakh. The first prize for the professional marathon in both men and women categories separately is Rs 10 lakh, the second prize is Rs 5 lakh and the third prize is Rs 3 lakh, besides other special awards.

The marathon will be sponsored by the Chennai-based construction company, MARG. Saurav clinches ICL Open squash, Dipika runners-up among women

Posted by പത്രക്കാരന്‍

Chennai (PTI): Top seed Saurav Ghosal did short work of his Indian compatriot Ritwik Bhattacharya 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 to win the ICL Chennai Open Squash Championship here on Sunday.

Saurav was tentative in the beginning before he found his grooves to come back from one game down and pocket the match in 40 minutes.

In the women's section, fifth seeded Indian Dipika Pallikal's dream run in the tournament was halted at the last hurdle as she lost to fourth seed Annie Au of Hong Kong 3-9, 8-10, 8-10 in 44 minutes.

Second seed Ritwik was in his elements in the first game as he led 3-0 and later 7-3 over his top seeded opponent before taking the game 11-7.

From the second game onwards, however, Saurav shifted gears and his gameplan to keep the ball in play and slowing down the pace to go for his measured shots, particularly the forehand drives, did the trick.

Saurav levelled the score by winning the second game 11-7 but in the third game the two were 4-all. Here, Saurav adopted front court play and relied on rhythm to take the score to 9-5 including a 'stroke' point award in his favour before winning it 11-7.

In the fourth game, Saurav did not give any leeway for Ritwik to come back into the match after a 7-3 lead. Ritwik also seemed to be distracted by some of the referee's decisions.

In the women's final, Dipika, playing in her first WISPA final, showed her inexperience and seemed overawed by the big occasion. Annie made mincemeat of India's pin-up girl to win in straight games.
